Psychological Therapies Training and Research Clinic

A Cognitive Behavioural Therapy service for students.

The Psychological Therapies Training and Research Clinic offers one to one Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for students at Newcastle University. If you are experiencing anxiety and / or depression, you can receive a full course of CBT (12-16 sessions) from a qualified CBT therapist, clinical psychologist or a clinician in training. We offer in-person and online appointments. The in-person appointments take place on campus in the Cedar Rooms, on floor 1 of the Dame Margaret Barbour Building

We accept referrals from the Student Health and Wellbeing Service. You can arrange an assessment appointment with them yourself and discuss the possibility of a referral to us. The Psychological Therapies Training and Research Clinic is a ground breaking initiative that provides you with quick access to evidence based talking therapy for common mental health issues.

We are not a crisis service and do not operate outside of standard working hours. If you are seeking urgent help, please follow the advice and resources on the Student and Staff Wellbeing pages

Student workshops

We also run a number of workshops for Newcastle University students. These are CBT-based and run as a series of four interactive 90 minute sessions. The workshops are designed to support students to develop skills to cope with the mental and emotional demands of study.

Current students can book via the NCL workshop portal

Our vision and values

Working for Students. The treatments for mental health are forever evolving and advancing. We are committed to immersing ourselves in research to understand student mental health and develop the treatments available. We hope to make an impact on students everywhere by sharing our work.

Respectful. We respect that every student is an individual. We tailor treatment to your self-identified goals and aspirations. We seek to understand your needs, priorities, abilities and limits to help you get the most out of your care.

Compassion. We ensure we respond to, and work with your mental health and distress with kindness and understanding. We commit to working side by side with you during your treatment at a pace that suits you, to get you moving forward.

Commitment to care quality. The psychological treatments available in the clinic are evidence-based interventions. We work safely to aid your recovery and even follow you up when treatment has finished to evaluate the treatment outcome and your progress.

Every Student Counts. We recognise the everyday stressors life at university can bring. We have developed ‘mind management’ skills workshops based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy available to every student at the university. We are committed to working with students from diverse backgrounds, across race, culture, sexuality, gender identity, disability and neurodiversity.
