Our laboratory at Cullercoats is an important facility for the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.

Dove Marine Laboratory

Our laboratory is dedicated to the study of marine biology, oceanography, environmental science, and coastal processes.

We aim to understand the complex interactions between marine life and their environment, and contribute to the conservation and management of marine resources.

Our facilities include: 

  • deep water tanks, with a water depth of 3m
  • main aquarium for large-scale experiments 
  • five experimental cabinets for smaller tank experiments

Current research projects

Ocean Sciences

Our research topics include air-sea gas exchange, modelling sea surface height, ocean circulation and 3D pathways of marine particles.

Evolution and Behaviour

We study the way that organisms react, adapt and interact. We work with a range of living systems, addressing long-standing and emergent problems in evolutionary behavioural ecology and applying our insights to tackle threats to marine biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

Ecology and Conservation

From the depths of the polar regions to the coral reefs of the tropics, our research into the biodiversity of the natural world spans the globe.
