Research provides the foundations for our work in the School.
Research is at the heart of everything we do, whether it's:
- teaching school children about a tooth-friendly diet
- offering smoking cessation advice to an adult with gum disease
- helping students to decide on the most appropriate filling materials
- advising on national health policy
Relevant to real life
Our focus is on translational research, work that is relevant to real life.
The majority of our activity goes through the Centre for Oral Health Research. This includes our laboratory research facilities and the Dental Clinical Research Facility.
We also have a research group involved in dental educational research.
Our results in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 are available to view. The Centre submitted our dental research as part of Unit of Assessment (UoA) 3.

Centre for Oral Health Research (COHR)Centre for Oral Health Research (COHR)
The mission of the COHR is to conduct world-class multidisciplinary research which improves oral health through academic excellence, policy impact and commercial innovation.
Dedicated research facilities
The Dental Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is the focus for our clinical research.
It facilitates access to patients via the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The juxtaposition of specialised laboratories enhances our translational research programmes.
Our staff play a significant role in international oral health research and policy development.
Ageing and oral health
An ageing population is a social and economic challenge. Oral health is a key component of healthy ageing.
Our strategy is to focus our research in this and related areas of public health. Much of our research is multi-disciplinary and we take a life-course approach.
Training and support

Dental Education Research GroupDental Education Research Group
Our group aims to establish the School as a leading contributor to dental educational research.
It aims to inform the enhancement, development and delivery of high quality dental education.
We aspire to improve our own learners' experiences and the quality of dental graduates.
We identify strategic research priorities, funding opportunities and complimentary collaborations. We nurture ‘dental educators’ who are new to educational research through shared experience.
We will create a ‘forum’ for educational research. It will promote, support and facilitate the delivery of high-quality educational research in the context of the study of dentistry.
