Gordon joined Newcastle University in 2023 as a lecturer in Accounting and Finance within Newcastle University Business School

Industry experience

Previously Gordon spent nearly two decades working in industry, initially qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG, and then worked in FTSE-100 companies, managing large teams at senior manager level. This included working on the IPO of Standard Life, leading the UK reporting team, and most recently Gordon spent 10 years at Lloyds Banking Group mainly at Group level. This involved working on implementing post-crisis regulation, ring-fencing, external stock market reporting, working with credit rating agencies, as well as involvement in over £200bn of dispsoals and acquisitions during the 2010s as Lloyds restructured it's balance sheet after the HBoS acquisition. Particular projects Gordon worked on included the acquisition of MBNA, the implementatin of IFRS9, and the sale of non-core assets, as well as capital and liquidity optimisation transactions.

Academic experience

Gordon completed his MBA at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) in 2011, and continues to teach on the University of Manchester Global MBA twice a year, including overseas in Singapore, Malaysia, and Dubai. In 2022, Gordon then completed his Doctoral thesis at the University of Manchester (supervisors Professor Julie Froud and Ismail Erturk), and since then has been working on converting thesis chapters into articles for subnission to academic journals. In 2021, Gordon decided to make the move to academia as a lecturer in Accounting, Banking & Finance at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he worked for two years gaining the FHEA qualification, before then joining NUBS. While at MMU Gordon developed and led units in Ethics and sustainability in finance, regulation and compliance in financial services, and risk management in financial institution, as well as accounting units.

Research interest

Gordon's research interest is focussed on financialization, with a critical perspective the current organisation of finance and the financial system, and on post-crisis banking reform, and has expertise in the Basel capital rules, Bank strategy, Bank financial reporting, and post-crisis reform.

Additionally Gordon also is working with colleagues at other insttitutions on studying the development of UK payments infrastructure, including archival research at the main UK 'clearing' banks, as well as sustainability in banking, with papers in progress for submission to academic journals.

For 2023 Gordon will be teaching on ACC3058 Business Finance on the PWC flying start programme, and will also lead on ACC2010 International Finance and Financial Markets, as well as delivering seminars for several other units including Corporate strategy and valuation NBS8005. In addition Gordon will supervise on dissertations.
