Teaching Fellow in HRM
I started my management career in the early 1990s in the utilities industry progressing to a senior management role with responsibility for a range of human resource management functions. In 1996 I joined the further education sector as a senior manager with responsibility for performance management. I held a number of roles in this sector including programme manager for the design of a new college; a role that demanded significant partnership working and strong leadership. In 2005 I joined the higher education sector initially in the role of partnerships manager working with the sector skills councils and further education colleges in the development of new foundation degrees.
In 2006 I started teaching in the HE sector and I have taught across a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive education programmes at the universities of Teesside and York St John. I have also held a number of curriculum management roles in the HE sector including MA HRM programme leader, MBA programme leader, and learning and teaching coordinator.
I am passionate about helping students to achieve their full potential both during their time at university and in their future careers and I deliver across a range of research methods and skills development modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Additionally I volunteer for a number of educational initiatives such as the Business Ambassador and Young Enterprise schemes and I also work with local schools participating in their mentorship and skills development programmes.
Since joining the HE sector I have undertaken a number of academic and practitioner research projects. The focus of my research is stress, emotion and coping and my current study builds on my earlier projects and my interest in ‘culture and coping’. My current research focuses on how memories of past experiences influence our emotions in the present and our hopes and aspirations for the future, research that is highly-relevant in an organisational context as it explores issues such as adaptation and resilience, coping resources and reserves, and readiness and resistance to change.
I also have a passion for developing qualitative researchers and I have published a number of research papers and book chapters focusing specifically on the emotional challenges that qualitative researchers encounter.
