We have a range of scholarships available for Computing students.
Sandman Undergraduate Scholarship
Name of Scholarship: Sandman Undergraduate Scholarship
Provided by: Mitch Gaglardi and the Sandman Hotel Group (UK) Ltd
The scholarships are intended to support students who, as a result of financial need, face restricted access to higher education and may not otherwise complete their degree course. The scholarships are designed to widen participation in higher education and to address an imbalance in gender representation in engineering and computer science.
Number of awards available: 4
Scholarship Amount: £2,500 per year for your first 3 years of undergraduate study.
Eligibility Criteria
Scholarships are available for those either in Year 1 of an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering OR Computing degree programme at Newcastle University. Preference will be given to undergraduate female home students, ordinarily resident in the UK, and those students who can demonstrate financial need or who have overcome adversity.
To be eligible for this award you must be:
- an undergraduate home student, entering Year 1 of study
- studying EITHER a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree programme OR a Computing undergraduate degree programme
Have and be able to demonstrate financial need for the award. This could include:
- unable to cover basic cost of living
- unable to participate in extra-curricular activities or field trips
- having to work in excess of 10 hours per week in a job

Applications for 2023-24 are now closed.
Applications for 2024-25 will open in Spring Term 2024.
Notice of Award
You will be informed by advancementscholarships@newcastle.ac.uk or the Student Financial Support Team by the end of the Autumn Term if you were successful in receiving the scholarship.
Conditions of scholarship
All scholarship recipients are asked to provide an introductory profile when they first receive the award, and an annual update report in Spring/Summer to inform their donor of their progress. You will be contacted to provide these reports with plenty of notice. Recipients are required to be available to meet the donors and participate in the promotion of student support activity at Newcastle University if requested.
