2003. Master of Science. Awarded by the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford (where I matriculated as a member of Hertford College).
January 2007 – January 2010. Doctor of Philosophy. Awarded by the Department of Sociology, University of Durham (where I studied as a member of Hatfield College and passed my PhD’s viva with only minor typing errors to amend).
March 2016. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Current Role: Teaching
Since May 2013, I have been a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at Newcastle University’s Business School.
I am module leader for the Critical Perspectives On Business Growth module (Bus 1004). In 2016 and 2017, I was nominated for the University's Teaching Excellence Award. Further information about BUS 1004 is available by clicking the ‘teaching’ icon of my profile.
I have three broad research areas: first, the sociology of entrepreneurship, especially from an identity perspective; second, the sociology of organisations, particularly in relation to lived-experience; third, the sociology of masculinity (following on from my doctoral work, and 'pre-business school' years). My research is generally guided, theoretically, by the sociology of Goffman and Bourdieu, and the methodological principles of ethnography and phenomenology. The overriding theme in my research relates to exclusion and inequality: I consider issues of entrepreneurship, organisational life and masculinity from the perspective of those who potentially face particular barriers, especially as a result of their social-class and sociological structure. How these barriers are transcended, or not, forms the primary basis of my empirical analysis.
I have published on social mobility among males (Giazitzoglu, 2014 in Sociological Research Online); male unemployment (Giazitzoglu, 2014 in International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy); how masculinity and entrepreneurship intersect (Giazitzoglu and Down, 2015 in International Small Business Journal), deprivation and enterprise policies (Journal of Strategic marketing) and how fear of failure impacts entrepreneurs (Journal of Business Venturing). I currently co-supervise two PhD students. I have supervised two PhD students to completion. I am keen to supervise more PhD students, working in my areas of interest.
Since 2013 I have acted as PhD coordinator for doctoral research into innovation and entrepreneurship conducted in NUBS' Marketing, Operations and Systems (MOS) subject group. Since 2015, I have been chair of the board of examiners for MOS' undergraduate programs.

I have analysed how a lack of cultural capital can prevent deprived people from embarking on the enterprise process. This analysis has been accepted in the Journal of Strategic Marketing and will be published later this year.
I have analysed how self-employment can facilitate a distinctive type of upward mobility experience for self-employed men. This analysis has been published as a chapter in Lawler and Payne's edited book (2017) entitled Social Mobility for the twenty-first century (Routledge). See:
More recently, I have written about my experiences of researching white working class men; as a PhD student. This account, entitled Being and Naughtiness: an account of being an ethnographic-insider studying white, working class gym-users, has been accepted by the highly prestigious Qualitative Report (Volume 23, Number 3, March 26, 2018).
I am delighted that the following publication has been accepted: Giazitzoglu, A and Payne, G. (2018) A 3-level model of insider ethnography and will be published in the Qualitative Report (Volume 23, Number 5; May 21, 2018);which is ranked in the top quartile for all social science journals. Giazitzoglu and Payne proposes a new model of insider ethnography.

I will act as a guest editor to the Journal of Strategic Marketing, for their special issue on ‘Open Innovation and Co-creation of Value: Linking Entrepreneurship and Marketing in the Social Commerce Era’. I have recently had two articles accepted after peer-review.
One of these articles considers the upward social mobility of a cohort of men living in the north of England from a qualitative perspective. My work on social mobility is available here:
and is published in Sociological Research Online (impact factor: 0.544): an online journal established in 1998 that is managed by a consortium of the British Sociological Association, SAGE Publications and the Universities of Surrey and Stirling and which qualifies for inclusion in the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
My second accepted article - Learning not to labour: a micro analysis of consensual male unemployment - considers the impact consensual unemployment has had upon a pool of males who live in a post-industrial locale. Learning not to labour is published in the International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy: an ABS listed journal established in 1981 that qualifies for the RAE.
