Congratulations to John Gallagher for winning the poster prize at the UK Cystic Fibrosis Trust Conference in Nottingham, on the 6-7th of September 2017, for his work carried out during his summer placement! Well done!
John did a 8 weeks summer placement in the Institute of Cellular Medicine, with Dr Aaron Gardner, Dr Malcolm Brodlie and Dr Chris Ward. The project was funded by the UK Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
John’s poster showed that the “Accumulation of ceramide may result in increased bacterial adherence in cystic fibrosis airways”.
Ceramide is a component of the cell membrane involved with the immune response and programmed cell death. Accumulation of this in CF airways may result in bacteria sticking to the surface of cells, exacerbating the chronic inflammation in CF sufferers causing lung deterioration. Preliminary results show that ceramide does seem to play a part in this, and they also point to potential future therapies.”
